In September 2013, the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC), chaired by University of the West Indies Vice Chancellor Prof. Sir Hilary Beckles, holds its first meeting, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Meetings are held in Brooklyn in 1976 and 1977. The purpose is to address disunity among the various forces in the Black Movement and to formulate a united front. A core group urges a call to convene the founding convention of the National Black United Front (NBUF).

In April 1989, the African-American Summit includes support for reparations in its concluding document: “We call for reparations. If they are good enough for the Japanese-Americans and Native Americans, they are good for those of us who worked for hundreds of years unpaid, and who now need that capital for our own development in this country?” (Salim Muwakkil, Black America: Blacks call for reparations to break the shackles of the past, In These Times (Oct. 11-17, 1989), p. 6)
